Transformative Education: Broker Research Project

Historically, BC Real Estate Association’s (BCREA) education programs and managing broker education programs (i.e. education programs delivered by real estate agencies to their REALTORS®) have not always been aligned.

With the help of a Real Estate Foundation grant, BCREA undertook the "Transformative Education" research project. They formed a project steering group made up of BCREA representatives, managing brokers and real estate educators that would guide and oversee the research.

By studying the situation and consulting with managing brokers on their priorities and values in regards to REALTOR® professional development, the project aimed to create better alignment, synergy and mutual support between education provided by BCREA and education provided by managing brokers. Open Schools BC led the research consultancy.

The project has resulted in collaboration between BCREA and the provincial Real Estate Brokers Association (REBA), and constructive dialogue between BCREA and the managing broker community in BC.

There are still challenges, however, such as adequately understanding and incorporating the diverse preferences and perspectives of real estate brokers who do not necessarily have a unified voice or context (e.g. large urban brokers versus small rural brokers). Follow-up research will be undertaken to address this.

Our grant helped the BCREA better understand BC REALTORS'® current education needs and priorities, which will inform – and hopefully transform – future education programming for BC REALTORS®.
