2010 Grants
The Real Estate Foundation's Board of Governors approved 67 grants during 2010, totalling $1,776,463. Grants were approved according to the Foundation's legislated purposes of research, public and professional education, law reform, and other activities intended for the public or professional good in relation to real estate activities.
$2,000 - Friends of Dominion Brook Park Society for a professionally prepared site plan for the Rhodo Ravine Restoration Project, an initiative of the Sidney-based, volunteer-run organization.
$2,118 - Britannia Community Services Centre to assist with a planning and design workshop, involving students and other community stakeholders, for a food garden at Vancouver’s Britannia Secondary School.
$2,500 - Fish and Wildlife Compensation Program-Columbia Basin/BC Hydro on behalf of East Kootenay Conservation Program in support of the workshop, "The Economics of Private Land Ownership," held in Cranbrook in October 2010.
$3,000 - Mayne Island Conservancy to support foreshore mapping, workshops on shoreline stewardship and educational materials for property owners as part of the Shoreline Care Program.
$3,000 - Osoyoos Desert Society to conduct the Native Cover Crop research project to determine which native plant life species most ideally support the region’s wildlife and vineyards.
$4,080 - Kamloops & District Real Estate Association for speaker costs associated with delivering Continuing Professional Education courses to KADREA members in 2010.
$4,915 - South Okanagan Real Estate Board for speaker costs associated with delivering Continuing Professional Education courses to SOREB members in 2010.
$5,000 - Cowichan Green Community Society in support of the Edible Neighbourhood Project--including mapping, planning, and public education and engagement--in the James Alexander neighbourhood of Duncan.
$5,000 - Misty Isles Economic Development Society to assist with the development of a trails strategy for Haida Gwaii.
$7,000 - Chawathil First Nation to assist with the public workshop and GIS components of the Hope area community's land use plan.
$7,500 - Kootenay Real Estate Board for speaker costs associated with delivering Continuing Professional Education courses for KREB members in 2010.
$7,500 - Regional District of Kitimat-Stikine to make maps and data related to the Lakelse Watershed & Foreshore Mapping Project available to public stakeholders.
$8,000 - Bulkley Valley Centre for Natural Resource Management in support of a conference-and-workshop on planning for the Crown-settlement interface lands. (Interface lands are those close to the boundary between Crown and settled lands.) The conference was held in Smithers in June 2010.
$10,000 - Better Environmentally Sound Transportation to assist with two community consultation events in Surrey, as part of the Living Streets project. The goal of Living Streets is to empower communities to help redesign streets to accommodate active transportation modes such as walking and cycling.
$10,000 - Bulkley Valley Centre for Natural Resource Management for inventory, mapping, and analysis of sensitive ecosystems in the Regional District of Bulkley-Nechako. The work will focus initially on high-risk grasslands, wetlands, and floodplains.
$10,000 - Canadian Home Builders Association of BC to assist with development of a Built Green Renovations course, which will provide technical instruction on building envelope design and building material selection to ensure proper construction methods when renovating a home for improved energy efficiency and indoor air quality.
$10,000 - Denman Island Memorial Society to assist with the establishment of a green burial ground (a burial ground consistent with conservation values) on land donated to the Society.
$10,000 - DreamRider Theatre in support of "Zero Heroes," a musical play that teaches children about reducing consumption and sustainable living practices.
$10,000 - Mid-Vancouver Island Habitat Enhancement Society for phase two of a project to analyze and map groundwater resources in the Englishman River watershed.
$10,000 - Nature Conservancy of Canada in support of NCC's work to assess and develop policies that will support the tenuring of submerged ocean and coastal lands and resources for the purpose of habitat conservation and, where appropriate, restoration.
$10,000 - Northern Lights College Foundation for student aid awards to assist individuals enrolled in eligible real estate and land use related programming at the Dawson Creek-based college.
$10,000 - Real Estate Institute of BC in support of a professional education symposium for REIBC members, held in Burnaby in March 2011.
$10,000 - Salt Spring Island Local Trust Committee, Islands Trust to develop and implement a Community Affordable Housing Strategy, including research, community education and engagement, local government policy reform, and concrete initiatives to create affordable housing opportunities on Salt Spring Island.
$10,000 - Simon Fraser University for a charrette in Vancouver's Gastown neighbourhood to engage local stakeholders on the topic of projected density targets; produce an "urban code" outlining the community's vision for the area; and promote best practices for planning and sustainable development at the neighbourhood level.
$10,000 - Wildsight for the fifth year of the Lake Windermere Project, as Wildsight hands over the water quality monitoring and water stewardship education programs to the community under the direction of the Lake Windermere Ambassadors.
$10,000 - Vancity Community Foundation to sponsor the inaugural "social purpose real estate" conference, held in Vancouver in November 2010.
$12,000 - Habitat for Humanity Boundary Society to assist with development of multi-unit housing in Grand Forks for men with special needs.
$12,200 - Denman Community Land Trust Association to support development of a legal framework which will protect long-term leases on private lands for affordable housing.
$13,950 - BC Northern Real Estate Board for speaker costs associated with delivering Continuing Professional Education courses to BCNREB members in 2010.
$15,000 - City of Prince George for inventory, mapping, and analysis of the open and natural areas. The data will be used to inform future land use and development policy.
$15,000 - Comox Valley Project Watershed Society in support of on-the-ground research, public education, and restoration activities in the Courtenay River estuary. These activities are part of the collaborative Estuary Working Group's work plan.
$15,000 - Ecojustice Canada to assist with the National Public Interest Environmental Law Conference, held in Vancouver in February 2011. The conference will allow lawyers, academics, and land use practitioners from across Canada to learn about, and build on, the BC experience.
$15,000 - Ecotrust Canada to produce research about the economic value of ecosystem services in Clayoquot Sound and test revenue generation models that may be useful for other forest communities.
$15,000 - O.U.R Community Association to assist in phase II of the Finance, Ownership, and Governance Project which is developing a new ownership model, financing package, and governance system for the Shawnigan Lake community.
$15,000 - Pembina Institute for a series of workshops as part of the Green Leaders Project in which Pembina is working collaboratively with local governments to implement effective green building policies.
$15,000 - Waterlution for an interdisciplinary workshop on water issues in the Okanagan. Participants ("young leaders" aged 20-35) will receive education and support to contribute to the sustainable management of their local watersheds and water resources.
$18,000 - Building Opportunities with Business to expand the Inner City Farm Network with three additional farm sites on vacant land in Vancouver's Downtown Eastside.
$20,000 - Fraser Basin Council to engage key professionals and decision makers in the lower Fraser Valley in dialogues about sustainability practices.
$20,000 - Green Bricks Education Society for delivery of sustainable building workshops in schools throughout BC during the 2010-2011 school year.
$20,000 - Projects in Place Society for a demonstration house constructed from pine beetle wood and locally sourced “green” products to be showcased at EPIC: The Sustainable Living Expo in 2011 then act as a permanent exhibit in Langley. (The project is not able to proceed at this time.)
$20,000 - UBC School of Environmental Health to undertake a study which will track travel, physical activity, and vehicle emissions before and after individuals move to more pedestrian-friendly, transit supportive developments. A goal of the research is to better understand the benefits of smart growth planning and evaluate the effectiveness of land use policies as a strategy for reducing auto dependence.
$25,000 - Coast Foundation Society to conduct a feasibility study to determine if the City of Vancouver will grant approval for additional residential units so that the Society can transition more mental health patients out of Riverview Hospital and into housing.
$25,000 - First United Church Mission to assist with design development and community consultation associated with First United's supported housing development in Vancouver's Downtown Eastside.
$25,000 - The Land Conservancy of BC to support a review of TLC's conservation covenant program, and provide resources and education to other BC land trusts and landowners.
$25,000 - Mortgage Brokers Association of BC to assist with development of a practical, online re-licensing course for BC mortgage brokers.
$25,000 - Raincoast Education Society for an integrated research and education program designed to promote water conservation and build a water stewardship ethic in Tofino.
$25,000 - Regional District of Kootenay Boundary to develop a strategic framework and action plan for managing Kettle River’s watershed and designating lands for agriculture. This is a collaborative research project between the Regional District, the Ministry of Agriculture and Lands, and the Southern Interior Beetle Action Coalition Society.
$25,000 - Sierra Club BC Foundation in support of the expansion of the Sustainable High Schools program. The program includes school presentations, school assessments, mentoring and networking, and ongoing youth support and training opportunities through Youth Steering Committees.
$30,000 - Your Local Farmers Market Society for pre-development and planning associated with development of the New City Market local food hub in Vancouver.
$30,700 - Islands Trust to assist with development of and public education around Green Shores for Homes, a new credit system which will support sustainable shoreline development of residential properties on the Gulf Islands and in other jurisdictions that adopt the program.
$32,000 - Mission Community Services Society to undertake detailed mapping of rural land uses in the District of Mission, with a focus on food and agriculture.
$33,000 - Land Trust Alliance of BC for research, and public and professional education activities in 2010-2011. The LTABC supports its member land trusts in conserving natural, cultural, and heritage values on private lands.
$33,000 - West Coast Environmental Law Research Foundation for year two of the Forest Ecosystems and Climate Change project: law reform research in support of a proposal for a new “carbon forest” land designation to enable conservation of forest ecosystems in the face of climate change.
$35,000 - Ecotrust Canada to research, model, and implement a green building plan so that new homes and infrastructure in west coast First Nation communities are built as examples of culturally appropriate green development, using local materials.
$35,000 - Heart and Stroke Foundation of BC & Yukon to support the involvement of three BC health authorities in the Healthy Canada by Design initiative, which focuses on translating the latest research on the linkages between health and land use planning into tools and systems to support policy makers, public health officials, developers, and planners to create healthier communities.
$35,000 - Regional District of Okanagan Similkameen to support phase II of the adoption and implementation of ecological standards and practices for responsible land use.
$45,000 - Atira Women's Resource Society in support of a 4-6 unit recycled/container housing project in Vancouver's Downtown Eastside.
$45,000 - Real Estate Foundation of BC to assist with the 2011 Gaining Ground conference, “Massive Collaboration: Urban Sustainability and the Stories that Bind Us,” to be held in Vancouver in October.
$50,000 - Pacific Community Resources Society to redevelop a motel in Chilliwack to provide 26 beds of transitional housing and nine self-contained supportive housing units. The project is a collaborative undertaking of several government and non-profit organizations.
$50,000 - Real Estate Foundation of BC for grants awarded to recipients of the 2011 Vancity/Real Estate Foundation Green Building Grant Program.
$50,000 - Spring Ridge-Fernwood Community Housing Land Trust to renovate a Victoria heritage house to create affordable rental units for low-income disabled tenants.
$60,000 - Vancouver Island Real Estate Board as a contribution to VIREB's 60th anniversary initiative to establish student aid endowment funds at Vancouver Island University and North Island College.
$75,000 - UBC Institute for Resources, Environment and Sustainability to develop an interactive database, or wiki, to assist land use decision makers in evaluating the overall sustainability of wastewater treatment options. The database will be unique in managing multiple and interconnected sustainability criteria.
$90,000 - Real Estate Foundation of BC to operate the Communities in Transition (CIT) program in 2010. CIT's goal is to build capacity among land-related practitioners in the non-metropolitan regions of BC. (Note that the CIT program wound down in 2010.)
$100,000 - Okanagan College to build two learning classrooms in the new Centre for Excellence in Sustainable Building Technologies and Renewable Energy Conservation at the Penticton campus.
$100,000 - UBC College for Interdisciplinary Studies as a contribution to the state-of-the-art Centre for Interactive Research on Sustainability. Grant funds are allocated to the West Green Wall of the innovative, high performance building, which will demonstrate leading edge research and sustainable design.
$240,000 - BC Real Estate Association to support research, public and professional education, and law and policy analysis initiatives in 2010-2011.
