March 2010 grants
The Real Estate Foundation's Board of Governors approved 22 grants at the March 2010 meeting. The total amount of grants approved was $526,365. This summary lists the recipients and a brief description of their projects.
$2,000 - Friends of Dominion Brook Park Society for a professionally prepared site plan for the Rhodo Ravine Restoration Project, an initiative of the Sidney-based, volunteer-run organization.
$4,915 - South Okanagan Real Estate Board for speaker costs associated with delivering the 2010 professional education program for Board members.
$7,500 - Kootenay Real Estate Board for speaker costs associated with delivering the 2010 professional education program for Board members.
$8,000 - Bulkley Valley Centre for Natural Resource Management in support of a conference-and-workshop on planning for the Crown-settlement interface lands. (Interface lands are those close to the boundary between Crown and settled lands.) The conference will be held in Smithers in June 2010.
$10,000 - Better Environmentally Sound Transportation to assist with two community consultation events in Surrey, as part of the Living Streets project. The goal of Living Streets is to empower communities to help redesign streets to accommodate active transportation modes such as walking and cycling.
$10,000 - Bulkley Valley Centre for Natural Resource Management for inventory, mapping, and analysis of sensitive ecosystems in the Regional District of Bulkley-Nechako. The work will focus initially on high-risk grasslands, wetlands, and floodplains.
$10,000 - Denman Island Memorial Society to assist with the establishment of a green burial ground (a burial ground consistent with conservation values) on land donated to the Society.
$10,000 - Nature Conservancy of Canada in support of NCC's work to assess and develop policies that will support the tenuring of submerged ocean and coastal lands and resources for the purpose of habitat conservation and, where appropriate, restoration.
$10,000 - Salt Spring Island Local Trust Committee, Islands Trust to develop and implement a Community Affordable Housing Strategy, including research, community education and engagement, local government policy reform, and concrete initiatives to create affordable housing opportunities on Salt Spring Island.
$10,000 - Wildsight for the fifth year of the Lake Windermere Project, as Wildsight hands over the water quality monitoring and water stewardship education programs to the community under the direction of the Lake Windermere Ambassadors. (The Foundation has supported the project since year one.)
$13,950 - BC Northern Real Estate Board for speaker costs associated with delivering the 2010 professional education program for Board members.
$15,000 - Ecojustice Canada to assist with the National Public Interest Environmental Law Conference, to be held in spring 2011 in BC. The conference will allow lawyers, academics, and land use practitioners from across Canada to learn about, and build on, the BC experience.
$20,000 - UBC School of Environmental Health to undertake a study which will track travel, physical activity, and vehicle emissions before and after individuals move to more pedestrian-friendly, transit supportive developments. A goal of the research is to better understand the benefits of smart growth planning and evaluate the effectiveness of land use policies as a strategy for reducing auto dependence.
$25,000 - First United Church Mission to assist with design development and community consultation associated with First United's supported housing development in Vancouver's Downtown Eastside.
$25,000 - Sierra Club BC Foundation in support of the expansion of the Sustainable High Schools program. The program includes school presentations, school assessments, mentoring and networking, and ongoing youth support and training opportunities through Youth Steering Committees.
$33,000 - Land Trust Alliance of BC for research, and public and professional education activities in 2010/11. The LTABC supports its member land trusts in conserving natural, cultural, and heritage values on private lands.
$50,000 - Pacific Community Resources Society to redevelop a motel in Chilliwack to provide 26 beds of transitional housing and nine self-contained supportive housing units. The project is a collaborative undertaking of several government and non-profit organizations.
$50,000 - Spring Ridge-Fernwood Community Housing Land Trust to renovate and modify a Victoria heritage house to create affordable rental units for low-income disabled tenants.
$90,000 - Real Estate Foundation of BC to operate the Communities in Transition (CIT) program in 2010. CIT's goal is to build capacity among land-related practitioners in the non-metropolitan regions of BC.
$100,000 - UBC College for Interdisciplinary Studies as a contribution to the state-of-the-art Centre for Interactive Research on Sustainability. Grant funds will be targeted toward the West Green Wall of the innovative, high performance building, which will demonstrate leading edge research and sustainable design.
