Sustainable food systems look at the big picture of production, processing, distribution, consumption of food, and waste diversion. Communities in BC are facing challenges – including climate change and development pressures on agricultural land – that affect the ability to grow our own food.
Local and sustainable food systems are a vital part of vibrant, healthy communities. As a philanthropic organization with a focus on sustainable land use, the Real Estate Foundation of BC (REFBC) is supports work ensuring that agricultural land can continue to support the growth and production of healthy, local food.
Since 2014, REFBC has co-led the BC Food Systems Working Group (SFSWG), which supported research, knowledge sharing, and action planning on local food policy in BC. In 2016, the SFSWG transitioned to Sustain BC.
Sustain BC is a provincial initiative that brings food systems leaders together, aligns priorities and coordinates action towards an ambitious goal: healthy, local food sustains all in BC by 2030.
To measure progress towards this goal, Sustain BC has identified five indicators and designed a shared measurement framework. This initiative is based on research and policy recommendations that emerged from the Sharing Common Ground Food Summit in 2016.
