The Smart Farm Project

The Smart Farm Project, based on the Sunshine Coast, explored whether increased density on small lots outside of the Agricultural Land Reserve (ALR) could rally landowners to provide affordable housing for a younger generation of farmers.

The project consisted of research, community outreach and recruitment of volunteers and properties for four case studies.

The project involved 250 participants. It produced:

  • 26 completed surveys from potential Smart Farmers.
  • Detailed farm plans, site designs and legal and financial feasibility analyses that have enough detail to make informed recommendations.

The Foundation's funding helped with this research to make recommendations for legal, planning and marketing mechanisms that will enable development of shared living spaces on small farms on the Sunshine Coast and across BC.
